Originally established as a statutory body and subsequently transformed into a foundation in 2000, Fondazione Pisa continues the philanthropic work of the Cassa di Risparmio di Pisa. Under its statutes, it operates in the key sectors of art, cultural activities and heritage, philanthropy and volunteering, and scientific and technological research. The Foundation also retains the assembly of members among its governing bodies, as a safeguard of its independence and of the mission of ‘public beneficence’ defined by the private individuals who founded the Cassa di Risparmio in 1834. Today, the Foundation seeks to reinterpret that philanthropic spirit in contemporary terms, serving as a qualified partner in addressing the needs of the local area within its main areas of activity, while maintaining full autonomy from public and private institutions and organisations.
The Scuola Normale Superiore is a university institution operating under a special statutory framework, whose prestige in research and education is internationally recognised.
The Normale promotes cultural activity, teaching and research across the humanities, the mathematical and natural sciences, and the social sciences, with a strong emphasis on their interconnections. Scientific, technological and cultural challenges find a fertile, open and stimulating environment here, where critical thinking, scientific rigour and intellectual curiosity are cultivated. The talent of its students, the innovative character of its research, and its engagement with society form the core values of its identity.
